Nitrogen is one of the most versatile and essential tools in the oil and gas industry. Its inert properties, availability in high volumes, and wide pressure range make it the go-to solution for dozens of applications across upstream, midstream, and downstream operations. Here are the seven applications where nitrogen trailers deliver the most value.
Before a gas pipeline is placed in service or removed from service, it must be purged through the flammable range using nitrogen. This displaces oxygen on the way in and hydrocarbon vapors on the way out, preventing a combustible mixture from forming. High-output nitrogen trailers are essential for large diameter pipelines where slow purging extends time in the dangerous flammable zone. Read our full pipeline purging guide.
Hydrostatic testing with water is the industry standard, but nitrogen pressure testing is used when water introduction is not acceptable — such as in dry gas systems, dehydration equipment, and offshore applications where water disposal is problematic. Nitrogen can achieve test pressures up to 6,500 PSI with properly rated trailer systems.
After hydrostatic pressure testing, pipelines must be dried before gas introduction. Nitrogen is blown through the line to displace moisture below the dew point specification. This is a high-volume, continuous-flow application where trailer output rate directly determines how quickly the line can be dried and turned over to operations.
Nitrogen is used as the propellant gas for pipeline pigs in applications where compressed air is not appropriate — including gas quality-sensitive lines and high-pressure operations. NitroTech trailers provide the sustained flow rate and pressure needed to move pigs through long runs without stalling.
Storage tanks, pressure vessels, and processing equipment require nitrogen blanketing to prevent oxidation, maintain product quality, and eliminate explosion risk. NitroTech trailers are deployed for plant turnarounds and facility maintenance where large volumes of inerting nitrogen are required in a short window.
New pipeline and facility commissioning requires a carefully sequenced nitrogen campaign: leak check, purge, pressure hold, and gas introduction. NitroTech can support the full commissioning sequence with appropriate volume and pressure for each step, reducing the number of vendors and coordination touchpoints on a complex startup.
In upstream operations, nitrogen is used for coil tubing cleanouts, velocity string operations, foam fracturing, and well unloading. High-pressure, high-volume nitrogen trailer systems can support well intervention operations where continuous nitrogen supply at consistent pressure is critical to job success.
NitroTech coverage: We deliver nitrogen trailer support for all seven of these applications to any location in the continental United States. Single trailer or multi-unit fleet deployments available. View trailer specifications.
Each application has different volume, pressure, and flow rate requirements. Pipeline purging and drying require sustained high volume at moderate pressure. Pressure testing requires precise pressure hold capability. Inerting may require extended low-flow supply. NitroTech trailers are designed to cover the full range, and our team can help you match equipment to application requirements before you mobilize.
