I run high-pressure nitrogen trailers for a living and I am proud of what we built, so you might expect me to tell you a bobtail is never the answer. I am not going to do that, because it is not true, and overselling is the fastest way to lose a customer’s trust.

The way I judge any nitrogen setup is by three things. How much product is onboard, how big the footprint is, and how easily you can move it. Our trailer is built to win all three on the right job. A bobtail wins a different kind of job. Here is the honest version of when each one is the better call.

What a Bobtail Is Good At

A bobtail stores nitrogen at around 2,200 PSI in a large tank on a 40 to 55 foot rig. That design has a real strength, which is sustained, continuous volume over a long pull. If you are running a multi week mainline pipeline job, you have full semi access, and you have wide open room to stage and work, a bobtail fits that job well. I have no issue recommending one when that is the work. It earned its place in this industry for a reason.

What Our High-Pressure Trailer Is Good At

Our trailer goes the other direction. Sixteen tubes at up to 6,500 PSI, carrying 50,000 plus SCF of usable nitrogen in roughly one third the footprint of a bobtail. It tows behind a pickup, not a big rig, though a CDL is still required to move it. It delivers up to six times the usable field output of a conventional cylinder bank, at 99.5 percent N2 or better.

That package is built for a different reality. Tight access sites, congested plants, multi test commissioning sequences, and jobs where you need to reposition with the work. Refineries, tank farms, data center builds, pipeline tie ins. Places where a bobtail’s size stops being a strength and starts being the problem.

How I Actually Decide

When someone calls me, I am really asking three things.

First, how much room is on site, and how much will the equipment have to move once it is there. Tight or moving favors the trailer. Wide open and static can favor a bobtail.

Second, what is the shape of the job. A long continuous mainline pull leans bobtail. A sequence of tests, or a drying and purging campaign with several setups, leans trailer, because carrying four to five tests of product onboard keeps the crew working.

Third, what is the access. If a big rig cannot get in clean, or routing one through plant traffic is a headache, the pickup-towable trailer wins before we even talk volume.

That is the whole decision. The right tool for the shape of the work.

Why I Will Always Tell You Straight

We built our company around a simple idea. If a standard catalog rig already solves your problem, you do not need us. I mean that. I would rather point you to the right answer and earn the next call than win one job by talking you into the wrong equipment.

The trailer we built is genuinely better for a large and growing share of nitrogen work. Lots of product, small footprint, easy to move. It is not better for all of it, and I will tell you when you are looking at one of the exceptions.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is a bobtail better than a high-pressure nitrogen trailer?+
Sustained, multi week mainline pipeline work with full semi access and open staging room. That continuous volume profile is what a bobtail is built for.
When is a high-pressure trailer the better call?+
Tight access sites, congested plants, and multi test commissioning sequences. It carries 50,000 plus SCF in about a third the footprint and tows behind a pickup, so it goes where a bobtail cannot.
How do I figure out which one my job needs?+
Look at site room, job shape, and access. Tight, multi test, or hard to reach favors the trailer. Long, continuous, and wide open can favor a bobtail. When in doubt, call and we will talk it through.
